Our mission is to preserve and celebrate the rich legacy of American railroads by exploring their development, innovations, and impact on the nation.

Before we go any further, I have a confession to make—I’m a devoted train enthusiast. The Great American Railroad is made for folks like you who share that same passion. My fascination with the iron trail started in my childhood, and if you’re like me, you probably caught the bug early on too. My great-grandfather was an engineer on the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, and though he was retired by the time I came along, his legacy loomed large in our family. While my memories are of diesel engines rumbling down the tracks, he piloted steam giants, including The Laurentian, the Delaware and Hudson’s premier passenger train running between Albany, NY, and Montreal, Canada.
He’s gone now, but his love for trains lives on, in me and many like me who feel that sharp pang of nostalgia when the ringing bell and blinking light of a railroad crossing mean that a train is coming…
